New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left Sunday’s home opener against the Miami Dolphins with 4 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter after taking a big hit from Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso and landing hard on his right throwing shoulder. While the Patriots put up a ton of points early on the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, Garoppolo injured his shoulder and had to leave the game.

The Dolphins did not score a touchdown until the third quarter when Ryan Tannehill found Kenny Stills for a 24 yard score. He went to a knee as the training staff worked on him and grimaced when his shoulder was touched inside his shoulder pad.

The Patriots have a short week and are back in action Thursday against the Houston Texans. He was 18 of 27 for 234 yards and three touchdowns at the time of the injury.

Brissett then led the team on a touchdown drive on the first drive of the second half, with Blount scoring on 9-yard touchdown run. Martellus Bennett also had five catches 114 and a touchdown. Running back LeGarrette Blount finished with 29 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Brissett didn’t complete either of the two passes he threw after entering but got the Patriots to halftime with a 24-3 advantage.

The comeback bid came to an end with two seconds left in the game when Tannehill was intercepted in the end zone. If Brissett also goes down, the Patriots’ emergency quarterback could end up being receiver Julian Edelman, who played quarterback at Kent State.

The team will likely quickly sign a backup for Brissett if Garoppolo’s injury is serious.
