-Sarah Paulson was another first-time victor for her role as Marcia Clark in The People v. O.J. Simpson.

“There’s great stuff on network, there’s great stuff on cable”, said Alan Yang, who won a comedy writing award with Aziz Ansari for Netflix’s “Master of None”.

Ben Mendelsohn of “Bloodline” and Maggie Smith of “Downton Abbey” cornered the Best Supporting Actor and Actress award in the Best Drama Series at the award gala.

Other Emmy newcomers included Canadian Tatiana Maslany, a surprise best drama actress victor who beat out presumed front runner Robin Wright for playing a woman with multiple cloned personalities in “Orphan Black”.

The first award of the night for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series went to Louis Anderson for “Baskets”. “What started out as a political satire, now feels more like a sobering documentary and make Mexico pay for it”. He began with a video montage that saw him hitching a ride to the Emmys with the cast of “Modern Family”, sharing a “Carpool Karaoke” with James Corden, a limo carrying Julia Louis-Dreyfus with Jeb Bush as the driver and ultimately getting dropped off by Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen atop her hulking dragon.

-Another first-time victor was Sterling K. Brown, who played Christopher Darden in The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Louis-Dreyfus, who won of the Emmy Award for best comedy actress for her role as USA president Selina Meyer in “Veep”, apologised for what she called “the current political climate”.

The Game of Thrones won most of the main and technical categories like best series, best writing, best direction et al. She brought the real Marcia Clark with her, and then apologized to her from the podium, saying that she’d been “superficial and careless” to judge Clark on the “two-dimensional” portrayals of her during the real O.J. trial.

Yet the series’ top actors went home empty-handed.

On stage, she said described Clark as a “complicated, whip smart, giant-hearted mother of two” who dedicated herself to “righting an unconscionable wrong”.

‘This is such a traditional men’s world, and I hope the fact a woman director has won this prestigious prize is going to mean that more non-conventional series and movies are going to be directed by women, ‘ she said of her win on this morning’s ‘BBC Breakfast’. Showrunner David Mandel honoured her in his acceptance speech: “I know it sounds like we work a lot of hours, but this should be an easy job because I get to work with Julie Louis-Dreyfus, who just makes it easy”.

Clinton tweeted back: “Congratulations on your Emmy, Kate!”

Unexpectedly flustered comedian: Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon, who declared, “I’m shaking, guys, as she accepted the Emmy for supporting actress in a comedy”.
