Veteran winners dominated top categories at the 68th Emmy Awards, underscoring the institution’s challenge in keeping up with a television landscape that has changed rapidly in recent years.

Bush asked Kimmel if he was a nominee for an Emmy award, and when Kimmel said yes, Bush said, “Wow, what’s that like?”

Maslany, another first timer, won the Outstanding Lead Actress award for the drama “Orphan Black”, and said that she was delighted to be in a show that puts women at the center of the action.

As the usa presidential election draws near, television’s stars didn’t hold back on their opinions at Sunday’s Emmy awards, some taking jabs at Republican nominee Donald Trump while others voiced support for Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton.

FX true crime television series The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story scored a total of four wins – best limited series, best actor for Courtney B Vance, best actress for Sarah Paulson and best supporting actor for Sterling K Brown – while other winners included Rami Malek as best lead actor in a drama series for Mr Robot and Tatiana Maslany as best lead actress in a drama for Orphan Black. “VEEP” received the trophy for Best Comedy for the second year straight.

The cast of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” pose backstage with their award for Oustanding Drama Series at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday. “Our show started out as political satire, but it now feels more like sobering documentary”.

No-show: Not even Kimmel’s declaration of “The Maggie Smith Rule” – he argued that winners had to be present – could stop Emmy voters from choosing Downton Abbey’s dowager countess for a third time.

Jeffrey Tambor, the star of the comedy “Transparent”, said in his speech that there should be more transgender actors. As if that wasn’t enough, Kimmel then joked about the meal’s “juice” boxes – a reference to Simpson’s football nickname – and wondered if Simpson was watching the show from prison and rooting for “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”.

Host Jimmy Kimmel traveled by white Bronco and by dragon, in a limo driven by a former presidential candidate, and even with CBS Late Late Show host James Corden, who abandoned him after a brief stint of “Carpool Karaoke”.

Besides best drama, “GOT” won David Benioff and DB Weiss the best writing in a drama series honour and best directing in a drama series for Miguel Sapochnik. “I’d like to dedicate this to my father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday”, she said.

“Please tell me you’re seeing this, too”, said Emmy victor Rami Malek, who plays a computer hacker on USA’s “Mr. Robot”.

“I think that “Veep” has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”, she said. “Ryan Michelle Bathe, you make this whole thing go”. She brought home her first Emmy a year ago for directing an episode of “Transparent”.

“Game of Thrones” announced 23 nominations and on Sunday night, took home 12 Emmy Awards, including the trophy for “Best Series”, “Best Director” and “Best Screenplay”.

“I’m happy to be able to stand with this in my hand for the team, happy that there was no one from ‘People vs. O.J.’ in my category”, she said.

While “Baskets” actor Louie Anderson and Kate McKinnon of “Saturday Night Live” won the Best Supporting Actor and Actress Award respectively.

Instead, Kimmel moved things along with small hilarious bits (at one point, the announcer introduced Dr. Bill Cosby and the audience froze) and (for the most part) good-hearted skewering.
