Naturalized US citizen from Afghanistan sought in Manhattan blast

Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage says two men called police and reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of the package after finding it at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The man then began firing as he ran down the street and police shot him in the leg.

Footage of a man planting a pressure-cooker bomb near a dumpster just before the explosion is depicted in one of the videos, reported CBS News.

The White House said President Barack Obama has been apprised of the explosion in New York City and will be updated as additional information becomes available. Amtrak shut down service on its Northeast corridor between NY and Trenton, New Jersey, because of the police activity.

Law enforcement circulated this image, purportedly of Ahmad Khan Rahami, who is wanted for questioning in the Manhattan explosion investigation.

Authorities investigating the New York explosion case were searching on Monday for a 28-year-old New Jersey man who may be armed and risky, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The package was detonated by law enforcement authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is on the scene.

Stepped-up security across the city is common as world leaders arrive for the United Nations General Assembly meeting, which is underway.

New Jersey State Police say that information comes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. There was no evidence to connect them to the New Jersey blast, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Trump has called for “extreme vetting” for USA -bound immigrants and for a temporary suspension of all immigration from certain countries with a history of terror – proposals his critics have blasted as overly broad.

Rahami pulled a gun and shot the officer – who was wearing a bulletproof vest – in the torso, and more officers joined in a gun battle along the street and brought Rahami down, police Capt. James Sarnicki said.

Cuomo was at Manhattan’s Penn Station to thank state troopers and National Guard members for their work protecting the public during and after the New York City and New Jersey shore town bombings.

Authorities have not said publicly that they have determined any link between the incidents, or a possible motive. “We need to do everything we can to support our first responders – also to pray for the victims”.

Authorities are seeking a man for questioning in both bombings.

The Obama administration, meanwhile, wants to boost the total number of refugees to the US next year to 110,000, a almost 30 percent increase.

He said the only change to his routine would be detours between NY and New Jersey.

Hours prior to the incident in Elizabeth, officials announced the detention of up to five individuals in connection with Saturday’s explosion in Manhattan that injured 29. No one was injured there.

The Democratic presidential nominee took questions from reporters Monday morning about the weekend bombings in Manhattan and New Jersey, which officials say increasingly look like acts of terrorism with a foreign connection.

Earlier on Monday, New York Police had released a photo of Rahami, 28, and said they wanted to question him about a Saturday night explosion in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood and for a blast earlier that day in Seaside Park, New Jersey, authorities said.

She said she supports “tough vetting” but noted that millions of “law-abiding” Muslims and other naturalized citizens are in the country.

Cuomo says: “Today’s information suggests it may be foreign related, but we’ll see where it goes”. In the immediate aftermath of that bombing, de Blasio and Cuomo were careful to say there was no evidence of a link to global terrorism.

Saturday night’s blast in the bustling Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan injured 29 people, and another unexploded device made out of pressure cooker was found several blocks away. By Sunday, 26 of the injured who had been admitted to hospitals had been released.

Investigators found similarities between the explosives used in both states, according to multiple law enforcement officials, but authorities said they have not concluded the incidents are linked.
