Texans must prepare for Patriots’ rookie Jacoby Brissett

Expected to be without September starter Jimmy Garoppolo for their Thursday night home game against the Houston Texans, the New England Patriots do not plan to acquire another quarterback before the game, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.

With rookie quarterback Dak Prescott looking poised throughout and scrambling for a 6-yard TD run in the second half, Dallas (1-1) won for only the second time in its past 16 games without the injured Tony Romo – and both of those victories came at Washington (0-2).

The Patriots exploded for 24 unanswered points in the first half and then held off a late rally from the Dolphins in their home opener, 31-24, before a sellout crowd at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Monday morning the New England Patriots are trying to determine how to proceed at quarterback after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a right shoulder injury.

Julian Edelman, who played quarterback at Kent State before switching to receiver when the Patriots drafted him in 2009, would likely be the other emergency option.

Now, Bill Belichick and Co. will have to weather the storm without their top two quarterbacks on the depth chart, at least for the next week. The pressure culminated with Tannehill being intercepted by linebacker Jamie Collins late in the first half.

COMEBACK DOLPHINS: Tannehill found Kenny Stills for a 24-yard touchdown in the third quarter and connected with Jordan Cameron for a 12-yard score in the fourth.

Garoppolo’s injury came in a flash.

Over the past three seasons, Brady’s passer rating – an admittedly subjective stat, but whatever – is 105.8 against blitzes. Kenyan Drake also had a 7-yard touchdown run as Miami closed the gap.

The rookie also managed the final drive that should have ended in a field goal – only to have the usually automatic Stephen Gostkowski miss from 39 yards.

Ryan Tannehill was bad for much of the game, but found success in the second half and had the Dolphins in position to tie the game had his pass into the end zone in the dying seconds been caught by a player on his team, instead of the other. There was a 37-yard completion Martellus Bennett turned into a big play with a stiff arm. Brock Osweiler is completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 499 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

“We’ll do whatever we think is best for the team”, Belichick said. “You can’t go out there and start slow and then kick it on later on”.

While the injury to New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garappolo was unfortunate, Kiko Alonso did nothing wrong and played well for most of the contest.

Parker had five catches for 106 yards and a touchdown in a season-ending victory over New England on January 3. But New England made do without him. Wide receiver Danny Amendola caught two touchdown passes – his first multiple touchdown game in his career. That is a big if though given his struggle to retain fitness over the previous year and a half and who knows if that will change. Philip Rivers could be without two of his most dependable sidekicks, although it’s helped San Diego that 2015 first-round pick Melvin Gordon has emerged at running back.Miami’s Foster went down with a groin injury.
