Police say bombings in NYC, New Jersey connected

The FBI pulled over a auto that spokeswoman Kelly Langmesser described as “a vehicle of interest in the investigation” on a road in Brooklyn at 8:45pm local time on Sunday. That includes investigating if an incendiary device was planted to cause the blast, a senior official familiar with the investigation told WNBC, our NBC station in NY.

No one has been charged, and the investigation is continuing, Langmesser said.

The FBI may be looking for additional suspects, the sources tell ABC News.

An explosion in Manhattan on Saturday injured 29 people.

WABC-TV footage showed 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher in Linden. He also has not been characterized as a person of interest. The neighborhood has many late-night and after-hours music clubs. An unexploded pressure cooker device was found a few blocks away.

Authorities cautioned that this is only a line of inquiry and not a conclusion.

Meanwhile, another explosion was reported in New Jersey early Monday even as authorities were interrogating five people in NY and Islamic State claimed responsibility for the mall attack.

Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were probing possible links among all the devices.

In fact, the explosive devices looked very different: the one used in New Jersey was pipe bombs and the one in NY was not. The fitness center located at 124 W. 23rd St. released a statement via its Facebook page. A loud boom is heard. “[We] are not taking any options off the table”. In this Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016 frame from video provided by Orangetheory Fitness Chelsea, a door shatters after an explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of NY. “I suspect we may get an answer on that today and there may very well be a foreign link”.

She would not provide further details, but a government official and a law enforcement official who were briefed on the investigation said that five people in the vehicle were being questioned at an FBI building in lower Manhattan.

All 29 victims had been released from hospital, officials said on Sunday.

The raid in Elizabeth came hours after an explosive device left near a train station there blew up when a bomb squad robot cut a wire on the mechanism, one of as many as five potential bombs found at the site, the mayor said. The men were travelling in an SUV and stopped by a heavy police presence near the Verrazano Bridge late on Sunday night.

The FBI and police are deciding how to remove the device, after the bomb squad suggested the package could be a live bomb. Authorities were trying to determine if they were connected.

Cell phones were discovered at the site of both bombings.

De Blasio also said investigators have so far found no connection to an incident earlier Saturday in Seaside Heights, N.J., in which a pipe bomb exploded near a Marine charity run.

Cuomo says he spoke to President Barack Obama on Monday.

“I’m extremely concerned for the residents of the community, but more importantly extremely concerned for everyone in the state and country where someone can just go and drop a backpack into a garbage can that has multiple explosives in it with no timers and then you have to wonder how many people could have been hurt”, Bollwage said. The trash container was blown clear into the street by the force of the blast.
