An all-too-brief second-half improvement by the visitors was insufficient to add to the single point they have gained so far, leaving them bottom of the Premier League pile.

There has yet to be a managerial departure since the season kicked-off in mid-August, yet this could change soon should Stoke’s miserable run of form continue.

Stoke managed a late consolation through Marko Arnautovic but are still without a win from their first five league games.

Stoke return to action on Wednesday night in the League Cup tie against Hull City, before former boss Tony Pulis brings his West Brom side to the bet365 Stadium this weekend.

Then he ruined it: “We are not a team that allows opposition four-goal head starts”. Hopefully we can come back stronger.

Andros Townsend: “In his first few games he’s not really produced a quality moment offensively, but he’s done all his jobs defensively and has been sound and solid for us”. It’s very hard – it affects your life at home.

“Obviously when you are conceding so many goals the confidence throughout the team is not great”, said defender Shawcross.

“It’s hard to understand why we are losing football”.

It was not until the 71st minute that Palace put the game to bed, and this time, it was two goals in a four-minute spell that did for the visitors. We’ve been ninth in the Premier League in the last three years, and we spoke about being better than that. You have hard periods and you come through it. Let’s get some wins on the board, aim for the magic 40 points and go from there.
