CFB preview: North Dakota State at No. 13 Iowa

Cam Pedersen’s 37-yard field goal as time expired gave the Bison a 23-21 stunner in what could be considered the biggest win in school history.

The Bison went for a 2-point conversion down 21-20 with 3:41 left, but couldn’t punch it in. The Bison’s offense, with sophomore Easton Stick taking over at quarterback for Wentz, has displayed balanced in the first two games, rushing for a 255-yard average and passing for 225.5.

Chris Klieman, NDSU head coach: “He’s a victor, he’s a great football player, unbelievable competitor”.

“They’re not going to beat themselves, so that being said, we have to eliminate the mistakes we’ve made to give ourselves a chance”.

The Bison, top ranked at the FCS level following a pair of overtime victories to open the season, will test Iowa with a Big Ten-type approach to the game.

North Dakota State, a Football Championship Subdivision (used to be Division I-AA) power, has won six consecutive games against top-level opponents since 2010. Entering today’s game with the No. 13 Iowa Hawkeyes, the Bison were 5-0 in their last five match ups with FBS teams.

Iowa, however, would go three and out on their final possession, as North Dakota State drove the ball 46 yards on their final drive to set up the game winning kick.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0) are coming from a 42-3 win over the Iowa State Cyclones in week 2. “Probably the only good news for us (is) we’ve got another nine football games in front of us, and that’s where our focus has to go here at some given point”.

Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard, battered all day by the Bison defense, had the same glare as Kittle at the penalty flag. Daniels has racked up 195 yards and three touchdowns on just 25 carries, and Wadley has 170 yards — with a Big Ten-best 8.1 per carry — and three TDs as well. They’ve collected .175 million from the teams they beat, including half a million from Iowa today.

In this matchup, the Hawkeyes, who are now tied with Michigan State for the third-longest active home winning streak in the nation, will be going for their 10th straight win at Kinnick Stadium. Instead, it was the Rebels’ second collapse in three games. Malone caught five passes for 69 yards and junior running back Jalen Hurd added a rushing touchdown. The defense chipped in with nine sacks.

The Bison (3-0) hosts Illinois State for their Homecoming game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.

The defensive difference-maker from Week 1 to Week 2 could well have been Josey Jewell.

The Cardiac Kids theme held true again versus Iowa.

Halfback Robert Martin rushed for a career-high 169 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown, and Chris Laviano threw a 75-yard scoring pass to Jawuan Harris in helping the Scarlet Knights (2-1) overcome a big deficit for the second straight week.

There are so many reasons North Dakota State should not be able to do this.

Clemson led 45-0 at the half against the FCS Bulldogs (0-3), and the third- and fourth quarters were 12 minutes each instead of the usual 15 minutes.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Joshua Dobbs threw two 20-yard touchdown passes to Josh Malone and ran for a third score and Tennessee overcame injuries and a suspension to hold off Ohio. Beathard has completed 67 percent of his passes for 427 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Frazier got 10 yards up the middle. For any program out there that enjoys paying money to suffer humiliation, the Bison now have two open dates on the 2017 schedule.
