Cowboys’ Randy Gregory withdraws appeal, to sit 14 games

Any hopes the Dallas Cowboys had of getting suspended defensive end Randy Gregory not only back sooner but for any games this season have been dashed after Gregory withdrew his appeal of an additional 10-game suspension.

The 10-game suspension is on top of the four-game suspension that Gregory is now serving.

Gregory is now serving a four-game suspension for violating the substance abuse policy in February. The league was discussing an increase to that penalty after Gregory failed another test.

At the 2015 NFL scouting combine, Gregory tested positive for marijuana, which put him in the league’s drug program. A second resulted in a two-game fine. He has already started his four-game suspension, and adding 10 more games will keep him out through Week 14.

In July, the Cowboys announced Gregory checked into a treatment facility. During his time off, Gregory is allowed to spend time at the Cowboys’ facility, he’s just not allowed to practice. He will have rehab for a long time.

Gregory was widely considered to be among the pass-rushers available in the 2015 draft until his stock dropped shortly before draft day. A high ankle sprain limited him to 12 games previous year, and he recorded 11 combined tackles. It all started in February when Gregory was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season after he violated the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Coach Jason Garrett said last week the Cowboys would have a role from Gregory when he was cleared to play.
