Suspect in NY Bomb Taken into Custody After Shooting Incident
Rahami is a suspect in both the Jersey Shore and Chelsea bombings.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man suspected in bombings in NY and New Jersey, is now in custody after a shootout with police, sources said.
“Convictions on first-degree criminal charges are commonly individually punishable by 10 to 20 years in state prison, while second-degree charges typically result in terms of 5 to 10 years”, the release read.
NY police were looking for Rahami for questioning in connection with the Saturday bombing in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, which injured 29 people. Around the time Rahami was captured, President Barack Obama was in NY on a previously scheduled visit for a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. Harinder Bains, owner of Merdie’s Tavern, said he was watching CNN on his laptop from another business he owns across the street. “Fortunately the officer had his bulletproof vest on”, Linden Police Captain James Sarnicki told reporters.
A childhood friend says that Mr. Rahami travelled to Afghanistan several years ago and was more serious and religious when he returned, Reuters has reported. He remains in hospital where he is expected to have surgery on his leg. Why did he do it?
American citizens can be held as enemy combatants if they take up arms against the USA or collaborate with enemies, giving the government more leeway in questioning the suspect.
A Democratic New Jersey congressman, Albio Sires, said Rahami contacted his office from Pakistan in 2014 seeking help because his wife had an expired Pakistani passport.
Rahami is a naturalized US citizen from Afghanistan with an address in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Schiff, a California Democrat, is ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee.
No one has been charged, and the investigation is continuing, Langmesser said.
A federal law enforcement official says three bombs found in NY and New Jersey had one component in common: a flip-style cellphone.
NYPD and New York State Police tweet photos of Ahmad Khan Rahami, saying he is wanted in connection to Saturday night’s explosion in New York. Those five people were questioned but do not face charges.
Ahmad Khan Rahami is taken into custody after a shootout with police on September 19, in Linden, New Jersey. Twenty-nine people were injured in the blast that occurred on West 23rd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
– Authorities believe Ahmad Khan Rahami is the man seen in surveillance videos rolling a duffel bag near the scene of the bombing in Chelsea, according to multiple officials.
As of Monday, the law enforcement official said, there is no indication he was on the radar before this weekend, when explosions went off in NY and New Jersey.
But Rahami – linked to the bombing by a fingerprint discovered on the remnants of one of the devices – left people who met him with mixed feelings. The arrest came after a series of blasts that officials said were acts of terror.
Before Rahami’s capture, Cuomo said investigators have no reason to believe there are further threats, but the public should “be on constant guard”.
Bomb technicians sent a robot to examine the devices.
The remaining four devices in the backpack will be taken to an Federal Bureau of Investigation laboratory at Quantico, Virginia, Bollwage said. The devices in New Jersey were made with pipe bombs; the New York City devices involved pressure cooker bombs.
On Sunday night, FBI agents in Brooklyn stopped “a vehicle of interest” in the investigation of the Manhattan explosion, according to FBI spokeswoman Kelly Langmesser.
Officials also confirmed there was no evidence of an wider terror cell operating in the city. Authorities say all three of the bombs in Chelsea and Seaside Park had flip phones, even though there are some differences in design.
The officials spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the case. Police immediately brought in the bomb squad. “And there’s no better example of that than the people of NY and New Jersey”, the president said. Earlier that day, a pipe bomb blew up in Seaside Park, New Jersey, before a charity race to benefit Marines. No one was wounded. Two other unexploded bombs were found nearby.
Obama said there is no connection between the bombings and another attack at a Minnesota mall this past weekend. This was the third incident over the weekend involving an IED in the New York City area.
Heightened security across the city is common during the UNGA.

Officials said there was no initial evidence linking either attack to any worldwide terrorist group.
