Game of Thrones has won the best drama award at the 2016 Emmy Awards, although its stars failed to win any of their five acting nominations.

Actress Sarah Paulson, who is nominated for best lead actress in a limited series, was joined at the show by Marcia Clark, the prosecutor she portrayed in the People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.

Two critical darlings earned major hardware, with surprise wins for Mr. Robot’s Malek and Orphan Black’s Maslany for outstanding lead actor and actress in a drama series, respectively.

Other Emmy newcomers included Canadian Tatiana Maslany, a surprise best drama actress victor who beat out presumed front runner Robin Wright for playing a woman with multiple cloned personalities in “Orphan Black”.

– a tearful Julia Louis-Dreyfus, accepting her fifth straight Emmy for best actress in a comedy for the HBO political satire.

Host Jimmy Kimmel opened Sunday’s show with a string of jokes about Republican presidential contender and former “Celebrity Apprentice” host Donald Trump.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series went to Louie Anderson from “Baskets”.

Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang won for writing on a comedy series for the Netflix series “Master of None”.

“For me to be here as an atypical leading man”. It wasn’t the most groundbreaking show on television, but it was hard to look away once you started watching. “I know these shows are long, and I know a lot of you haven’t eaten since Labor Day”, the host joked. Thanks, host Jimmy Kimmel! In the race for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series it was Ben Mendolsohn for “Bloodline” who walked a way with gold. I’m not downplaying her genius, nor her brilliance, but the dominance of HBO is nonsense and Veep is not even close to the best comedy on television.

Later, “Veep” Emmy victor Julia Louis-Dreyfus “apologized” for the current political climate.

Tom Hiddleston, who starred in The Night Manager, presented the award for outstanding directing in a limited series or movie to the show’s director Susanne Bier. “Transparent” director Jill Soloway was honoured for his direction to the comedy series.

In what was the strangest win of the night, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Kate McKinnon of “Saturday Night Live”. Soon after, her face was filled with tears as she dedicated the award to her father, who died Friday.

Smith has been nominated multiple times for her role as Violet Crawley in “Downton Abbey” but has not attended the ceremony.

“This one is for you, girl”, Vance said, and ended his speech with “Obama out, Hillary in!”

In another revision, this one implemented a year ago, voting was expanded from blue-ribbon panels to – depending on the award – giving substantially more or all of the academy’s 20,000-plus members the chance to vote for finalists. Both Kimmel and Burnett, who accepted an award later for another one of his shows, “The Voice”, joked about that series’ stars being future Supreme Court nominees.
