Emmy awards US TV audience hits all-time low

After another year of Emmys domination for Game of Thrones – HBO’s drama now holds the record for most wins for a prime-time series – it’s easy to forget that the series is coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Her rivals included Game Of Thrones stars Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams, but the 81-year-old went on to land another Emmy to her bulging trophy cabinet – her third for her Downton role alone.

The Emmys for “The People v. O.J. Simpson” helped boost FX, the 21st Century Fox-owned cable network that has positioned itself as a sanctuary for creative freedom on an ad-supported TV platform. The show captured five Emmys, including one for outstanding limited series.

FX’s “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, went into the show with 22 nominations, including multiple acting nods, writing, and best limited series.

Did anyone else have to do a double take when Kimmel found Jeb Bush in the front seat of President Selina Meyer’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) presidential vehicle? In her acceptance speech she playfully apologized for her show’s corrosive contribution to the “current political climate”. “Our show started out as a political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary”, she said while accepting her award.

Fortunately, Emmy voters weren’t completely stuck in a rubber-stamp mode. Rami Malek of “Mr Robot” and “Orphan Black” actress Tatiana Maslany overcame heavyweight competition to be named best actor and best actress, respectively. They are both superficially and substantially the kind of things that only exist in the award show ecosystem so know-it-alls can compare them to the straight-ahead nonsense that constantly wins.

Damon tells the host, “I’m sorry, I mean, you lost, but now you gotta stand out here for the rest of the night in front of everybody, when you probably just wanna go home and curl up and cry”.

Elsewhere, Jeffrey Tambor won best comedy actor for a second time for his role as a father who transitions to a woman in Amazon’s ground-breaking “Transparent”. Do that. (.) I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a female transgender on television. And Paulson made a public apology to Marcia Clark for failing to recognize the former prosecutor not as a “complicated, whip-smart, giant-hearted mother of two. righting an unconscionable wrong”, but seeing her 20 years ago as the “two-dimensional cardboard cutout I saw on the news”.

Kimmel was not the only one to pin Trump’s rise on reality TV. But who knew TV producer Mark Burnett would get the blame for Trump’s entire candidacy? “We’re not mailing this to her. Maggie, if you want this, it’ll be in the lost and found”.

Other great wins for the night came when Regina King won her second Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for American Crime Story, and she could hardly believe it.

But one vehicle had a man playing himself: Jeb Bush.

The all-time Emmy list of winners – which includes nonfiction – is topped by NBC comedy sketch show “Saturday Night Live”, with 45 awards, one of them handed out Sunday to Kate McKinnon for best supporting actress.

“Thank you, Ellen DeGeneres.thank you Hillary Clinton”.

“Were you nominated?”, he asked Kimmel.
