After the Tailgate: Louisville’s Lamar Jackson is clear-cut Heisman favorite

Oklahoma still might have one of the 25 best teams in the country, especially considering its offensive talent, but at some point you have to show it on the field to stay ranked. We will continue to give you updates and analysis heading into Clemson football’s match-up against Georgia Tech on Thursday.

The University of Louisville football team’s rapid rise through the Associated Press Top 25 continued Sunday by matching highest ranking ever in that poll – No. 3 nationally, behind No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Ohio State.

The Crimson Tide received 50 first-place votes in the AP poll after coming from 21 points down to win 48-43 at MS on Saturday.

A number of teams moved up six spots, but Michigan State is the one that did so based on its own success, not others’ failures.

Lamar Jackson ran for four touchdowns and threw for another score and No. 10 Louisville routed No. 2 Florida State 63-20 in what was billed as an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown game. The Seminoles’ only bright spot was 10 straight points to get within 14-10 before Jackson took over.

“You pick out a few games each year where you’re going to focus on over the winter, over the spring and summer, and make sure that you get well-prepared for it”, Coach Bobby Petrino said.

North Dakota State, the five-time- defending FCS national champion, set a record for most points AP poll received by team from Division I footballs second tier.

5-year senior quarterback Tyler O’Connor can now add Notre Dame on to Ohio State as quality teams he has quarterbacked his side to wins over.

Michigan State defeated Notre Dame to give the Irish their second loss of the season. Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and USC all kissed their playoff hopes goodbye. The Cardinals also held FSU (2-1, 0-1) to 284 yards and forced two turnovers.

Not too long after Florida State bowed out against Louisville, it appeared another top four team was in trouble in Ann Arbor.

This time around, Oklahoma opened with an upset loss to Houston and hit another glitch on Saturday when the Sooners were swamped by then-No.

Just by looking it would seem that Alabama will have the toughest time making the National Championship as they will face, at the moment four more ranked teams, while the Cardinals will face two. The Cornhuskers are back in the poll for the first time since 2014.

No. 24 Utah moved to 3-0 after beating San Jose Stater 34-17 on the road.

With the biggest win in school history less than 3 yards away, North Dakota State went for two and failed.

But after giving up a touchdown in the final minutes of the first half, and a 69-yard punt return for a score to Jaire Alexander to begin the second half, the wheels fell off for Florida State into a 63-20 pounding by the Cardinals.

— OR essentially gave its spot to Nebraska. The Badgers sleep-walked through a victory against Georgia State before starting a daunting stretch that includes back-to-back games against the Spartans and No. 4 MI.

Georgia edged Missouri 28-27 on Saturday night, as Eason completed 29 of 55 throws for 308 yards and three scores. The Bulldogs have found their quarterback of the future and present in Jacob Eason. Myles Garrett had two sacks and Texas A&M’s defense harassed quarterback Sean White enough to minimize big-play chances for Auburn (1-2, 0-1). Arkansas and A&M clash in Arlington – the victor keeps pace in the ever-loaded SEC West.

Unlike overwhelming losses to OR and Houston in bowl games to end the previous two seasons, the Seminoles won’t have a whole offseason to stew about their latest defeat.
