Sprint Joins Rivals In Kicking Two-Year Phone Contracts To The Curb

When asked why Sprint is able to offer new iPhones and upgrades for just $22 a month, Claure explained that the company is working with a partner to resell year-old iPhones. Those who don’t want to trade in an existing phone are not left out as Sprint allows you to get your hands on the iPhone 6 at $22 a month. Sprint’s new proposition is similar.

RootMetrics today released its First Half 2015 US Mobile Network Performance Review, which ranks the US carriers based on performance across the country.

In the last week or so, the market has shifted even more on the handset front, with Verizon eliminating two-year contracts and subsidized smartphones for new customers and Sprint announcing it will move exclusively to a phone leasing model by year-end.

But increasingly, carriers are adopting models by which customers pay full prices for their phones – which run in the hundreds of dollars – and have the costs divided over a series of months or years. AT&T and Sprint still offer subsidies for customers who sign a two-year contract, but more of its customers are switching to installment plans.

With Sprint’s new iPhone Forever service plan, CEO Marcelo Claure is taking his ongoing attack on larger rivals – and on the existing business model of U.S. wireless carriers – to an “11”.

Two-year contracts, as they allow customers to buy a new iPhone at the beginning of the contract, have been quite popular. You would just have to make a down payment and walk out with your phone.

Yesterday, Sprint Corp (NYSE:S) unveiled a simple, yet powerful offer for iPhone fans: iPhone Forever, only from Sprint. Sprint beat out T-Mobile in the other four categories. Nearly 51 percent users availed the option and bought a new phone, as reported by the Wall Street Journal; seeing its success, Sprint introduced the iPhone Forever plan. And when a new iPhone launches, you can get it. Without any additional cost.

He continued, “There is an iPhone that has been released for the last few years every single year, and (Samsung’s) Galaxy”.

Those on other carriers, meanwhile, also have the chance to turn in an old smartphone (not necessarily an iPhone) and get the promotional $15 monthly rate on a new iPhone until December 31, 2015. Third-party AT&T retailers can only sell devices at full price or on the Next payment plan.
