Aleppo aid trucks ‘bombed’ as Syria truce ends
A helicopter attack on the southern village of Dael killed at least eight people, activists said.

A United Nations spokesman said at least 18 of 31 trucks had been hit but could not confirm it was by an air strike.
United Nations special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura voiced outrage at the attack on trucks bound for Aleppo.
Syrian military claimed armed groups had taken advantage of the truce to mobilise and arm themselves while attacking government-held areas. Images posted online showed lorries and trailers engulfed by flames.
As the cease-fire crumbled Monday, the watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported airstrikes and clashes on the ground near Homs and Aleppo, killing at least one woman and leaving multiple people injured. The Syrian government has not commented. “There is no hope of aid being delivered now”.
“The situation on the spot is very chaotic and we are deeply shocked that humanitarian workers and missions have yet again suffered from the brutality of this conflict”, Sedky added.
He said the USA was willing to extend the cease-fire despite the statement from Assad’s government.
The truce had been put under intense pressure following a series of airstrikes at the weekend and a spat between Moscow and Washington over four US-led airstrikes which mistakenly killed around 60 Syrian soldiers on Saturday.
Syria’s military has declared the week-long ceasefire over.
In a statement carried by state news agency SANA, Syria’s army said a freeze on fighting it had announced last week had ended, blaming rebel groups it said “did not commit to a single element” of the truce deal.
The US, which brokered the truce with Russian Federation, said it is making efforts to extend the agreement.
In a written statement later Monday, the State Department said it has seen the Syrian military’s comment and that it expects Russian Federation to ensure Assad’s compliance with the ceasefire deal.
US officials are awaiting a response from Russian Federation to a suggestion for extending the cessation of hostilities in Syria, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday in NY.
The US, Russia and other key players are still set to gather Tuesday in NY for talks aimed at ending the five-year conflict that has killed more than 300,000 people and displaced millions.
“The destination of this convoy was known to the Syrian regime and the Russian Federation”, State Department spokesman John Kirby said.
However, he also repeated calls for the sustained delivery of humanitarian aid to Aleppo and other besieged communities.
Air strikes have hit rebel-held parts of the Syrian city of Aleppo after the military declared the current cessation of violence was over.
The UN aid chief Stephen O’Brien said if the “callous attack” was found to be deliberate it would amount to a crime.
Last Monday, a Russian-U.S. ceasefire was implemented in Syria, bringing relative calm to the most troubled areas, including Aleppo. The figure does not include dozens of Syrian soldiers and Islamic State militants killed in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, the Observatory said Monday. However, the USA officials said details of the agreement were shared on Monday.

Assad called that incident “flagrant aggression”, while Washington called it a mistake.
