Steelers, Redskins stand together, hold American flag during anthem

“I ain’t talking about Pittsburgh”, Jones yelled to a group of reporters who started to approach him in the locker room on Monday. Come out chucking it around early, turn the ball over once or twice and you’re down double digits before you know it. I don’t have to wait for a game like this or a matchup of significance like this where the emotions run high to express that. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Tuesday, Sept. 13. The offense looked to be operating in full swing despite missing Le’Veon Bell and Markus Wheaton.

The Redskins signed star cornerback Josh Norman to great fanfare, and $15 million a year, this offseason, but made clear since training camp they wouldn’t cherry-pick his matchups, that he’d patrol one side of the field while Breeland worked another. In each game Cousins had some chances to make plays but didn’t come though. It establishes control over your opponent. You could see it in Jamison Crowder’s fumble and in Kirk Cousins forced interception on the very next play. That tipped ball can go either way.

Forget the odds. The Steelers are going to go for it.

“I remember when I asked Tom Brady after the game past year, ‘When did it click for you?’ In a sense, I asked him, ‘When were you no longer a work-in-progress?’ And his answer was what I would echo here: ‘It’s still clicking.’ You’ve never figured it out”.

Things were what they were on special teams.

Repeatedly, the Steelers relied on players who hadn’t done it before, who hadn’t been asked to play the expanded roles they were asked to on Monday night or who hadn’t done it with the Steelers in quite some time. With too many weapons at the skill positions, studs along the offensive line, and a top-three quarterback, an opponent’s defense can’t afford to be unbalanced and still be successful.

“I heard we had problems previous year, but I’m the new guy and I just see this group on the rise”, said nickle back Sean Davis, a second-round draft pick starting in his first National Football League game in front of family and friends from his native D.C. They took us behind the woodshed today. Matt Hasselback talked about it during the pre-game.

The Steelers defense was also stingy. Norman locked him down for a lot of the first half, but as the game progressed Brown figured out ways to beat him. Yet Tomlin said he does not feel the need to address his players about the importance of keeping their cool this week either on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook – or the playing field.

If last night is any indiciation, Washington won’t be seeing that glory again any time soon.

Still, the Redskins had a number of opportunities to make the game competitive.

The Redskins proved that they’ve got a long way to go on the defensive end. Cousins was woeful Monday.

“Our offense, when you are working on our card defense, you get challenged”, said Tomlin. That’s when Washington picked up safety/cornerback Will Blackmon last season and he performed well much of last season in a patchwork secondary.
