NY, NJ bombings: Did Ahmad Khan Rahami act alone?

The FBI and New York City Police Department had identified Rahami as a suspect in the series of attacks on Monday morning, while New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described him as “armed and risky”.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man wanted for questioning in connection with the bombings in NY and New Jersey, is now in custody after a shootout with police, sources said.

A bomb had exploded on Saturday night in Chelsea, damaging buildings and wounding 29 persons.

The review site took action Monday, listing the restaurant’s page with an “active cleanup alert”.

Linden police Captain James Sarnicki told American broadcaster NBC news that Rahami had opened fire on an officer who woke him from his sleep in a doorway when Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and local police converged on an apartment address near a train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Rahami was captured after he was discovered sleeping in the doorway of a bar by the owner, Harinder Bains. A second device, made from a pressure cooker filled with shrapnel, was found undetonated a few blocks away. “He saw a man asleep in the little entrance way, in the vestibule, and I believe that’s when the police, I’m not sure exactly what happened then, but that’s when the police showed up at that point”, he said. His family owns a fried chicken shop there.

Rahami’s father and brothers had long nursed tensions with neighbors and officials in Elizabeth, New Jersey, over the restaurant’s late hours, a conflict the family claimed in a lawsuit was the result of discrimination against them as Muslims.

Ahmad Rahami, a naturalized US citizen, was taken into custody after a shootout with police in Linden, a nearby town.

The backpack in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was found around 9:30 p.m. Sunday in a wastebasket outside a neighborhood pub – about 500 feet from a train trestle, officials said.

The Rahami family members were hard-working immigrants, pious, friendly and popular for their crispy fried chicken, Nunez said.

BILL SWEENEY, FBI: I have no indication that there is a cell operating in the area or in the city.

Another law enforcement official says investigators pulled over a vehicle carrying three men and two women “associated” with Rahami when it appeared headed toward an airport Sunday.

The Rahami family says they were the target of anti-Muslim harassment.

After zeroing in on Rahami and learning of the auto that had traveled between New Jersey and NY, authorities pulled it over Sunday night after it headed in the direction of Kennedy airport.

The police and Rahami were involved in a shooting after the 28-year-old fired shots that hit a police officer. The bullet was stopped by Padilla’s bulletproof vest. “My experience is once the Federal Bureau of Investigation zeroes in on someone, they will get them”. More officers joined in a battle that spilled into the street. Authorities are investigating the stabbings as a possible terrorist attack but have not drawn any connection between the bloodshed there and the bombings. His last known address was in Elizabeth.

But Ahmad Rahami’s demeanor increasingly devout but more likely to talk about worldly pursuits than his faith never hinted at anything but goodwill, customers said. It’s hard when it’s home.
