Obama Will Veto 9/11 Bill, Earnest Says

The legislation has so far met Senate approval, but the White House has threatened to veto the measure, a move supported by Qatar and the rest of the Gulf countries. “The president feels quite strongly about this”.

The White House then signaled that Obama would veto the legislation.

When US Vice President Joe Biden visited Ankara several weeks later, he said he understood the “intense feeling” in Turkey over Gulen.

The legislation could also further strain relations between Washington and oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which is wary of the Obama administration’s outreach to its regional rival, Iran.

The bill was pushed by a bipartisan coalition in the House and Senate led by members from NY who have long felt the powerful and enduring passions of families who lost loved ones in the attacks.

If Obama used his veto and two-thirds majority voted against, it would be the first time in history that the Congress had cancelled a presidential veto. According to CBS News, the bill was sponsored by Senators John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, and Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat.

Blumenthal says he is prepared to lead an override effort if the President vetoes the bill.

In a Monday statement, the league’s Secretary-General, Ahmed Abul-Gheit, warned that the bill would sour relations if the USA administrations failed to veto it.

“There is now a list of countries that are state sponsors of terrorism – it’s something that is made public by the federal government, and the impact is serious”, Earnest said. The pact, which requires congressional ratification, has been stalled on Capitol Hill amid deep skepticism about trade deals among segments of the American electorate. “Hillary Clinton can no longer be silent”.

If Mr Obama does veto the law, the vote to override is not likely until after the November elections.

Earnest said that criminal justice reform and the president’s nomination of Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court-a nomination Congress has not acted on-also could be discussed at the meeting. But he has been highly critical of Saudi Arabia for failing to reciprocate the financial and military support it gets from the United States. The president did visit after returning to Washington.

Josh Earnest, the While House press secretary said at the time: “This information does not change the assessment of the U.S. government that there’s no evidence that the Saudi government or senior Saudi individuals funded Al’Qaeda”. “Are they going to do right by the people of Louisiana?”
