Wentz, Eagles go to 2-0

Maybe last week wasn’t a fluke. Gase could ultimately fail as the Dolphins’ head coach, but he understood how to call plays, and just as importantly, he knew how to connect with Cutler.

Maybe they have something here.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (11) throws a pass during the first quarter against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

On the other side, the defense was outstanding, giving up just one touchdown. It was Cutler’s second turnover of the third quarter.

The Bears are a 3-point favorite to win the game, according to Vegas Insider.

This week the degree of difficulty will go up as the Eagles take on the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. They’re tied with the Giants at 2-0 atop the NFC East.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson had two explanations Monday: One was that the team felt Wentz could handle the added responsibilities.

It’s hard to grade the run blocking seeing as the Eagles’ strategy was clearly to spread the Bears defense out and throw the football.

After the fumble, the Bears opened their next drive with seven consecutive running plays before a Cutler incompletion on a pass to Zach Miller.

Even though he played two more offensive series after the fumble, Cutler watched Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham step in front of an underthrown pass intended for Alshon Jeffery another 10 yards up the field and chose to exit and begin treatment in the locker room.

He throws a nice screen pass to tight end Trey Burton, who punches it in for six.

The Bears looked okay in the first half of their Week 1 bout with the Texans. If not for a Connor Barth missed field goal, Chicago would have had a halftime lead and perhaps something to build off of in the second half. He hit a 54-yarder in 2013.

After impressing on his pro debut against the Browns, Wentz is looking forward to delivering another productive performance in Week 2. It was a four-point drop.

And the Eagles reached 2-0, despite Jordan Matthews absolutely blowing a ideal pass by Wentz that should have been a 35-yard touchdown in the second quarter. The good news is that it’s not the first time he’s had to go on the road and play on a bigger stage than he’s ever seen before.

Down – Ill-timed penalties: The Eagles weren’t flagged a lot (five penalties for 34 yards), but the when the yellow hit the ground, it usually cost Philly a positive play, including two completions to Brent Celek. However, the second half wasn’t quite as good, at least not offensively. Jalen Mills was in coverage and couldn’t stay with the big receiver. Chicago Bears kicks off at 8:30 P.M. Eastern Time. Zach Miller broke out past year with 5 touchdowns after not seeing much action early in his career with Jacksonville. At the end of the day, the Eagles won this game by a comfortable margin.

And even after Eddie Royal’s 65-yard punt-return touchdown late Monday, the Bears are the third-lowest-scoring team in the National Football League with 28 points in two games, ahead of only the Seahawks (15) and Rams (9).
