Tigers top Indians, 9-5

The Tigers had lost the first two games in the series, but avoided being swept.

Carlos Carrasco, the Indians’ No. 2 starting pitcher, will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right hand when hit by a line drive off the bat of Detroit’s Ian Kinsler on the second pitch of a 1-0, 10-inning win over the Tigers.

YANKEES: Second baseman Starlin Castro left in the fifth inning after straining his right hamstring while rounding first base on a double. James McCann scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead. Carlos Santana’s solo homer in the bottom of the sixth made it 6-5, and then Detroit blew it open on J.D. Martinez’s three-run homer off reliever Joe Colon in the ninth.

Justin Upton, with his back to the left-field wall, caught a fly ball hit by Mike Napoli, for the second out of the eighth inning.

The Tigers bullpen gave up a run – Alex Wilson allowing a homer – but got a five-out performance from Shane Greene and four-out save from Francisco Rodriguez to hold on for the win.

The future Hall of Famer became the 100th Major League Baseball player to reach 2,500 hits, and the eighth to do it by his age-33 season.

Bauer (11-8) hit three batters, including Kinsler in the third. Anything can happen when 93-plus miles per hour fastballs are careening in all different directions.

Cameron Maybin walked and Cabrera singled to load the bases. Bauer hit Victor Martinez on the right knee, sending Detroit’s designated hitter to the ground. Kinsler said something to Bauer before crossing the plate. Martinez was down for several minutes before getting up and limping to first base.

It was the second time in the series that Victor Martinez was hit by a pitch in his right knee.

RED SOX 6, YANKEES 5: Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Mookie Betts had the tying single before scoring the go-ahead run and host Boston earned its third straight win over NY.

■Don’t blame me: Tigers starter Daniel Norris denied throwing at former Tiger Rajai Davis in the third inning as retaliation for Bauer hitting three Tigers. Kinsler was ejected by Baker following the bottom of the fifth. He walked one and struck out six. Hanley Ramirez and Bogaerts each had three hits for the AL East-leading Red Sox (84-64), who entered two games ahead of Toronto and Baltimore (both 81-66).

This is a pretty significant blow for the Indians, who are now leading the American League Central, and are fighting the Texas Rangers for the best record in the American League.
