Authorities: 44 cited, 1 jailed in Iowa pipeline protest

Authorities say 44 people were cited and one person was jailed during a weekend protest meant to block construction of a major oil pipeline in southeast Iowa. Protesters were removed after walking through a line of private security and sheriff’s deputies who stood in front of the driveway.

Fresh off the Farm Aid concert over the weekend in Virginia, Neil Young is stepping up to lend support to Native American and Canadian tribes opposing DAPL oil pipeline construction on their lands. One pleaded not guilty and faces a trial.

Several Native American tribes are speaking out against the proposed oil pipeline – which would run some 1,170 miles through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and IL – citing potential negative effects on the local drinking water supply as well as other environmental concerns. It also would cross 18 Iowa counties and 1,300 parcels of land. Reznicek says she’s doing it for those who can’t join the protest.

Reznicek was among those who were arrested Saturday afternoon.

“There’s precedent for oil pipelines leaking or breaking”, Scherf told the Dubuque Telegraph Herald.

On Friday, a federal appeals court ordered a halt to construction of another section of the pipeline in North Dakota.
