Fans started sending acclaimed actor Richard Dreyfuss (spelled differently) tweets and messages of condolences, assuming he was her father.
But dominating the evening was FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, which took home five Emmys, including the prize for outstanding limited series.
Louis-Dreyfus, who plays the vainglorious US president Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep”, apologized for what she called “the current political climate”.
“I think Veep has torn down the wall of politics and comedy”, she said.
And to be honest, we’re a little shocked more people don’t know the difference between Louis-Dreyfus and Mr. Dreyfuss. She promised to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it. That ties the record it set a year ago, when it scored the most Emmy wins for a series in a single season.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus made history when she picked up her 5th consecutive Emmy at today’s award show.
Paulson hailed “this incredible group of actors, these magicians”, particularly praising co-star Sterling K. Brown, who won a supporting actor Emmy for his work portraying co-prosecutor Christopher Darden.
“Veep” producer David Mandel also blasted Trump, saying that if he dared use similar rhetoric as that of the divisive candidate on the HBO comedy, he would be fired.
It was her third win for playing the formidable dowager, but she didn’t attend the ceremony.
The Jaws star wrote: “I’m actually not Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ father”.
The “Veep” actress narrated a documentary titled Generosity of Eye about the collection, after her father chose to open a dedicated art space in Mount Kisco, New York.
However, Louis-Dreyfus soon entered more emotional territory by thanking her father, billionaire businessman William Louis-Dreyfus, who died Friday at age 84.
Sherlock The Abominable Bride was named outstanding television movie and writer Steven Moffat referred on stage to The Great British Bake Off’s move from the BBC to Channel Four.

This is one election Selina Meyer did win, if you will.
