India sucessfully test-fires surface-to-air missile

In further boost to its air defence capabilities, India today successfully test fired a new, long range surface-to-air missile from a defence base off Odisha coast.

The missile was launched in its full operational configuration from a mobile launcher.

Earlier, between June 30 and July 1, 2016 three consecutive test firing of the medium range surface to air missile, jointly developed by India and Israel were conducted from the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) base at Chandipur. Though the result of the test was immediately not known, another test of the missile has been planned from the same test facility in the afternoon. After successful experimental tests, the missile will be inducted in the armed forces. It has a speed of Mach 2.

According to reports, the system comprises of features, including a Multi-Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) in order to detect, track and guide the missile.

Apart from the radar, the missile is guided by on-board avionics.

Meanwhile, the district administration is taking all precautionary steps to see that residents of the hamlets near the testing range are not affected.

A team of Israeli scientists is stationed around the area to witness the tests.
