Tottenham to assess Harry Kane’s ankle injury after Sunderland win

We’re still trying to see better play of the ball, we try and play better, but we’re just at the start. “All the lads are very passionate and love football but sometimes it doesn’t go in the way you want”.

Pochettino also addressed the injuries players suffered in the game, with Harry Kane, Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier all being forced off.

“We just hope it’s not too bad”, said Lloris.

“We defended a lot for 90 minutes, but they’re a top quality side really, let’s not kid ourselves and that’s why they finished in the Champions League spots last season”.

“We deserved more, but it was an important three points for us”.

“All our internationals had a hard summer, they played in the Euros, and it’s more hard to get fit”. This had been a good weekend for Jose Mourinho cast-offs until Djilobodji attempted – and failed – to add himself to the list of names proving the former Chelsea manager wrong.

While Tottenham will be grateful if it turns out that Kane will miss two months rather than four, there is no doubt that it would be a massive blow to their chances of success this season.

The England global, who scored the victor in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Sunderland at White Hart Lane, had to be carried off on a stretcher following a collision with Black Cats defender Papy Djilobodji. The 27-year-old’s defending matched the visitors’ pink and purple third kit – comical.

On the other wing, Son was sent into space by Dembele’s pass, but made a decision to fire at the target instead of putting the ball across the face of goal for Dele Alli, hitting the side-netting.

But, having chested the ball down, the Senegal global contrived to miss what should have been a straightforward clearance and Kane coolly side-footed past Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Pickford said: “It’s good to have some of the injured lads back”.

Son ensured Jason Denayer – a late inclusion in the Sunderland side in place of Patrick van Aanholt – endured a torrid Sunderland debut at right-back but concurred there should have been more by way of end product before Kane’s 59th-minute breakthrough.

The opening exchanges suggested Sunderland keeper Pickford should bed in for a busy afternoon and he was well placed to hold Toby Alderweireld’s header from a 15th-minute corner after turning a Kane effort behind.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is readying £17million striker Vincent Janssen to step into the breach if needed.

Very scary moment for Tottenham Hotspur supporters today. His performance was fantastic. “We need to wait”.

Tottenham nearly allowed Son to join Wolfsburg in the summer, but Pochettino is now pleased that the forward agreed to stay and fight for his place.

“It’s the same case for the other players involved in the last Euros”, said Lloris.

“I always say to all the players, the truth is on the pitch. All we can do is keep getting on the training field and making it better and I enjoy doing that”.

Sunderland’s toothlessness in attack meant they were ill-placed to take advantage of Tottenham’s unfortunate late flurry of injuries, with Januzaj’s second booking for a late challenge on Ben Davies completing a forgettable trip to the capital. Every game he has to make more than five saves and mentally you can get exhausted, but he was wonderful and until the end he made the difference.

“He doesn’t lie to his players and it was the case after the Monaco game”.
