Trekkies (or Trekkers) and causal fans can now comment on a series of Star Trek related posts (or any other subjects) in a Star Trek themed way. We also wanted to honor the original design and spirit of Reactions, so we needed visual cues that were easy to identify at a glance, like Geordi’s visor.

Star Trek is going where no beloved science fiction TV and movie franchise has gone before: straight into Facebook’s reactions.

“It makes sense that Kirk, as the first captain, is first up after “like” and “love, ‘ and that a Klingon should be the ‘angry” reaction given that they are easily agitated”, explained Facebook Messenger’s marketing lead Lindsey Shepard in a post.

The show, which followed the exploits of a 23rd century crew of interstellar explorers, distinguished itself with its intricate plot lines that often featured prescient social commentary, and its colorful cast of characters including the logical half-human Spock, the compassionate Dr. “Bones” McCoy and the purely passionate Captain James T. Kirk.

Roddenberry Entertainment has announced that the company has a phonetic library of the late Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who famously voiced the computer on Star Trek (and had on-screen cameos throughout the Original Series and Next Generation eras).

The Star Trek reactions debuted on September 8 to mark the series’ anniversary and will be available for a limited time. Without mentioning specifics, she said additional experiences will focus on “community and moment-driven events”.

Zachary Quinto: “I think it’s got themes and ideas that set it apart as a franchise, because they are actually relevant and resonant to today’s society, and that’s something that has always been a corner stone of ‘Star Trek'”.
