No matter how strongly many in India demand a forceful retaliation, analysts say New Delhi’s options are probably limited to imposing diplomatic and trade restrictions on Islamabad.

“The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Nawaz Sharif, is duty bound to make all the member countries of UNGA understand that Kashmiris have to be given their right to self-determination”.

“The truth is that the Modi government’s Pakistan policy is based on wholesale confusion rather than pragmatic and decisive cohesion”. The minister said Pakistan was fighting against terrorism and it could get benefit of Italy’s military experience which is an important member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. India and Pakistan are now observing a 2003 ceasefire along the borders and the LoC, which has largely stayed despite violations. More than 80 people have been killed.

The NIA took over the investigation from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, which had registered a case on Sunday, and began probe by collecting evidence available with the Army formation at Uri, 102 kms from here.

Some Indian politicians and army veterans have called for a muscular response to the assault, including air strikes on training camps on the Pakistan side of the Line of Control that divides Kashmir.

He said the Modi government “appears to have learnt no lessons” which finally resulted in the cowardly Uri attack. As the government devises a plan of action to prevent such attacks, it must take into account the fact that infiltration across the LoC is showing no signs of stopping. Sources said Sushma Swaraj, minister for external affairs, will raise Pakistan’s involvement in the attack at the United Nations on September 26.

Surjewala also sought to know why the soldiers were housed in tents when two military buildings were vacant.

The total recoveries from the four slain terrorists was four AK 47 rifles, four Under Barrel Grenade Launchers, 39 Under Barrel Grenade Launcher grenades, five hand grenades, two radio sets, two GPSs, two map sheets, two matrix sheets, one mobile phone and a large number of food and medicine packets having Pakistani markings, he said.
