Elsewhere, Rami Malek, 35, who is of Egyptian descent, is a front-runner for his first Emmy for his lead role as a socially awkward computer hacker in USA Network’s “Mr. Robot“.
“I knew it was going to be popular but I didn’t know it was going to be so widely popular”.
FX’s long-ignored drama The Americans starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys could cause an upset and take the top prize.
“I would not be unhappy were I the last cis-gender male to play a female transgender person on television”, he said. Before that, she honed in on GOP contender Donald Trump’s campaign.
She also joked that her widely-acclaimed show had started as a comedy but was increasingly resembling a documentary – a slap at the chaotic USA presidential campaign. “So I promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it”.
History was made as Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her fifth consecutive Emmy for the political comedy, and after a light-hearted apology for helping create the current political climate, she ended her speech with a heavy-hearted tribute.
Maggie Smith won the Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama for “Downton Abbey”.
Her rivals included Game Of Thrones stars Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams, but the 81-year-old went on to land another Emmy to her bulging trophy cabinet – her third for her Downton role alone.
The “Veep” actress narrated a documentary titled Generosity of Eye about the collection, after her father chose to open a dedicated art space in Mount Kisco, New York. The loss “makes a lot of sense”, Damon said.
Brown played prosecutor Christopher Darden in the drama about the murder trial of OJ Simpson. Her hands were shaking up on stage.
Louie Anderson was honoured as best supporting actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of a loving but tough mom in “Baskets“.
In total, Louis-Dreyfus now has eight Emmys thanks to her role in Seinfeld.
In response, Clinton tweeted “Congratulations on your Emmy, Kate! Big fan of yours, too”.

Jeb Bush popped up in the taped introduction, bragging he found a $12-an-hour Uber driver job.
