Shooting leaves 2 officers, 4 others wounded; suspect dead

Commissioner Richard Ross said 25-year-old Nicholas Glenn left behind a letter labeled “Doomed People” that was full of “rantings” mostly about himself but also about his anger at his parole officer and police in general. Police believe Glenn acted on his own and not as part of a group. Ross said there is no reason to believe the suspect was “radicalized” after searching multiple addresses linked to him. Sylvia Young was sitting in her police auto when a suspect opened fire, according to Fox 29 News.

Aside from the officers, the identities of the other people injured in the spree were not immediately released.

“Obviously, he was hell-bent on hurting a lot of people”, the commissioner said at a news conference, adding that “we aren’t absolutely clear as to why”.

“This rambling suggests that he clearly was trying to target a police officer, as he did.so it just kind of makes it very clear to us what he was out there to do”, Ross said. That woman died just before 2 a.m. Saturday.

A “rambling” note expressing hatred for police was found after at the scene of the violent event. He then opened fire into a vehicle, killing a 25-year-old female, Ross said. He proceeded to grab a woman to use her as a human shield.

Nearby officers heard the gunshots and began pursuing the suspect on foot.

One of the three wounded civilians was in critical condition, police said. Ross said earlier that police believe the note was written by the gunman; he said it expressed hatred toward law enforcement and named a probation officer. “This is completely a freakish situation”, he added.

A Philadelphia man’s shooting spree left one woman dead and five others injured. The suspect was shot and killed by police.

Commissioner Richard Ross said, “This is a completely freakish situation”.

Commissioner Ross said Sergeant Young, who works in the 22nd District was shot eight times in the arm and vest. Both were in stable condition Saturday.

In this alley, the commissioner said, is where the suspect was then shot and killed by police.

Ross said he was astounded the officers survived the close-range shooting, and recalled the January 7 ambush shooting of Officer Jesse Hartnett.

The confrontation came a day after an officer was ambushed in her vehicle in west Philadelphia and a university police officer and four other people were shot before the gunman was killed. Ross says Ed Miller of the University of Pennsylvania police force also was wounded. During the chase, the suspect fired shots into a tavern, striking a security guard in the leg, Ross said.

Moments later, as police gave chase, the suspect shot into a auto, striking a man and a woman in the chest.

The Friday incident is the second attack on police officers in Philadelphia this year. The shooter was then arrested and told investigators he “acted in the name of Islam” and “pledged his allegiance” to Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL), US media report. There was no immediate word on the officers’ conditions.
