The Air Force confirmed that both pilots ejected. It is unclear whether the pilots were injured.
The host unit at Beale is the 9th Reconnaissance Wing (9 RW) assigned to the Air Combat Command and part of Twelfth Air Force.
Sources from within Beale Airforce Base told Action News Now that the plane crashed in the Sutter Butte Mountains was the training version of a U2 spy plane.
Few details were released about the crash in Sutter County, but two pilots in the high-altitude, all-weather reconnaissance aircraft were ejected, said Air Force Capt. AnnMarie Annicelli.
First used in the late 1950’s, the high-altitude U-2 aircraft are still being used to gain intelligence on the battlefield.
