Samsung Note 7 recall finally official; Replacements due September 21

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission told customers to “immediately stop using and power down” the device.

Analysts have cut their earnings expectations for the South Korean tech giant after it announced on September 2 a recall of Note 7 smartphones from 10 markets due to faulty batteries that caused phones to set on fire.

A shocking revelation is that according to data from Apteligent, despite warnings, Note 7 owners are still using the phones.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Kaye at the consumer safety commission said Note 7 purchasers should check the back of their device for an identifying number, and visit Samsung’s recall website or call a hotline at 1-844-365-6197 to find out if the device needs to be turned in.

Lithium-ion batteries in the phones have been overheating, leading to burns and explosions.

You can either get a refund or a replacement, and the CPSC says customers should contact their wireless carrier or the retailer from which they purchased the phone.

In an official statement released by Samsung, they confirmed that the new Galaxy Note 7 replacement units will arrive in the us, which basically means that consumers can start receiving the new gadget next week.

Samsung takes its customer relations seriously and to prove that point, the President and COO of Samsung Electronics America personally addresses customers with regards to the Note 7 battery issue and the solutions that the company is now undertaking to resolve the crisis.

According to Samsung Vina Company, the swap programme was applied for 12,633 handsets sold in the domestic market from August 19 to September 7. Looking further into the issue, Samsung identified battery cell issues as the cause of the device’s exploding behavior.

Airlines across Europe, the USA and Australia have banned passengers from putting the phone in checked baggage and charging the device in the air. The recall extends to devices with a 5.7-inch screen in the colors black onyx, blue coral, gold platinum and silver titanium, the announcement said.

“We don’t comment on pending litigation”, Samsung spokeswoman Danielle Meister Cohen said in an email.

The recall comes at a crucial time as rival Apple has just released its new iPhone 7. About 97 percent of phones sold in the US are being recalled. However, it might definitely set the minds of Note 7 users at ease.

Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T and US Cellular have all confirmed they will have replacement devices available at their retail locations by September 21.
