The scope and intensity of the federal inquiry are unclear, but it comes as Ms. Kane prepares to mount a legal fight against criminal charges that she leaked confidential material to embarrass a critic, and then lied about it under oath.

Kane’s spokesman Chuck Ardo says his boss reimbursed the state for the satellite feed of her news conference.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the FBI is investigating embattled Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane.
“The court gave (Kane) clearance to do it. I don’t know why in the world she wouldn’t”, said Jack Treadway, retired chairman of the political science department at Kutztown State University. In June, Kane fired the director of labor relations who told her not to hire Duecker.
Mr. Duecker was a controversial selection. “I’m running because now, more than ever, we need an experienced prosecutor as our next Attorney General”. The “court of public opinion” should be important to her, he said. He declined to comment Thursday.
Koval said the case against the 49-year-old attorney general is not the first time his office has created a site for high profile cases.
Ms. Kane said she wants to release the emails, but Judge Carpenter’s order precluded her from doing so.
Last fall, Kane made public many emails and attachments her investigators found in the computer system when reviewing how the office investigated child predator Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach convicted of molesting 10 boys.
In recent weeks, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have asked about the trip and how it was paid for, sources said.
Besides the perception of retaliation, Kane’s spokesman Chuck Ardo said other concerns surround the disclosure of the names of other people who exchanged the emails.

Last week, Kane lashed out at her accusers, saying the indictments are payback for her prosecution of the Porngate Scandal. “We don’t know who appeared in front of the grand jury and that makes it problematic”, he said. “They have the one horse tied up to the tree”.
