The most-tweeted about stars were (in order) Maslany, Paulson, Malek, Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon, first-time victor for best supporting actress in a comedy series, and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, marking her fifth win for best actress in a comedy series.

“We’re standing up here because George Martin created the world that we all live and play in”, said co-creator Dan Weiss.

Smith is 81 years old and has had a long and impressive career that has seen her win Oscars, BAFTAs, Emmys, Golden Globes, SAGs, and even a Tony. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.

Sunday’s ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, was broadcast against NBC’s popular “Sunday Night Football”, which generally draws the largest TV audience of the week.

“Did you know you can make United States dollars 12 an hour driving for Uber?” he asked Kimmel.

Kimmel joked before her category was announced that the awards show would start to institute the “Maggie Smith Rule”-if you want your award, you have to show up to the ceremony to get it”.

For the second consecutive year, “Game of Thrones” took home the hardware for best drama series. The show won five trophies including Outstanding Limited Series plus acting gongs for Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance. “I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a transgender female on television”. The actress also held back tears as she dedicated her win to her father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who had passed away just a few days ago.

“Transparent” was a powerhouse at the Emmys, taking home Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series; however, the most talked-about moments surrounding these awards were the acceptance speeches made by both director Jill Soloway and actor Jeffrey Tambor. Basically, she’s kind of a boss, and if she doesn’t want to attend an Awards show.well, she doesn’t have to.

First-time nominee Rami Malek (Mr Robot) won for best lead actor in a drama, while Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) won the prize for best lead actress in a drama, in a surprise win for the BBC America series.
