Frank Lampard out 3-to-4 weeks after straining calf muscle

New York City midfielder Frank Lampard could miss the final four games of the MLS regular season with a calf injury.

Although the 38-year-old’s injury is far from pleasant, Lampard should be more than prepared to return to the pitch well before the start of the 2016 MLS Playoffs.

The club now sit third in the East on 45 points ahead of Friday’s home clash against the Chicago Fire, two points behind first-placed Toronto FC having played a game more than the Canadian side. The former England global has become a key player for Patrick Vieira’s side, and will now miss the crucial regular-season run in.

NYCFC has four games left in the regular season, though Lampard should be able to return before the end of the schedule because of the worldwide break early next month.

The news is a blow for NYCFC, which has risen to within two points of top spot in the Eastern Conference in large part thanks to Lampard’s excellent form.
