Wynwood, described by the Miami Herald in 2015 as the city’s “hippest, hottest emerging neighborhood”, was the site of the first transmissions from local mosquitoes in the continental United States in early August.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and CDC officials attributed the drop-off in infections in Wynwood to aggressive aerial spraying with naled, an insecticide that targets adult mosquitoes, and street-level spraying with another pesticide that kills mosquito larvae.

Miami-Dade County commissioners met Tuesday to discuss a resolution to ask the state for additional money to combat the Zika virus.

Stern has offered to deliver challah to pregnant woman outside of the Zika area, according to the AP. The Florida Department of Health’s zone of investigation has been expanded to include much of Miami Beach, Governor Scott announced last week (September 16).

Wynwood was the first place in the USA where mosquitoes began transmitting Zika, which causes several brain-related birth defects.

On Monday, after an aggressive mosquito control campaign and three mosquito incubation periods have elapsed with no new cases in Wynwood, the CDC has taken Wynwood off its list of no-go places for pregnant women, though it does still advise them to “consider postponing nonessential travel” to Wynwood (along with the rest of Miami-Dade country).

As of September 14, a total of 3,176 cases of Zika had been reported in the United States, the CDC said.

A plane contracted by Miami-Dade County mosquito control officials sprayed naled over South Beach on Sunday. As of Friday, Florida has a total of 93 cases of Zika caused by local mosquitoes.

Of 85 non-travel-related Zika cases in Florida residents, 31 were associated with Wynwood and 40 with Miami Beach. “We simply follow the CDC recommendations”.
