Iranian paralympians bag 16 medals so far

Natasha Baker completed her hat-trick by winning the grade II freestyle event, while Sophie Wells – the fourth member of the victorious team; Pearson was not selected – took grade IV silver.

His first lift of 270 kilograms secured him the gold medal of Men’s +107kg Group A before clearing the bar of 300 kilograms at his second lift.

The 24-year-old swimming veteran bagged her first individual gold of the Games with a Paralympic record in the women’s S9 100m backstroke on Friday (Saturday AEST), the penultimate day of the meet.

The former Victorian, who now trains at Castle Hill in NSW, said the past four years had been challenging after surgery on both her shoulders in 2013 and a change of coach.

After Lee Pearson won the grade Ib freestyle title – for his 11th Paralympic gold – Christiansen won the grade Ia equivalent ahead of team-mate Anne Dunham.

She added: “It does say “I’m away at the Paralympic Games”. Up until last week, I didn’t even know which horse I would be bringing”. They’ve locked me out, so I can’t (check them). The big matchup with the US team, winners of two of the four Paralympic wheelchair rugby tournaments held since 2000, is scheduled for Friday.

Dan Greaves continued his streak of an F44 discus medal at every Paralympics since Sydney 2000 with bronze.

The Iranian gold winners in Rio have been Sareh Javanmardi (2 times), Majid Farzin, Mohammad Khalouvandi, Gholamreza Rahimi, and Siamand Rahman.

Two of her three golds came in new events, the 400m and 800m.

The 55-year-old also won gold in London four years ago competing against men in a mixed road time trial.

The category includes 14-time world champion Tatyana McFadden, who dominated the race to push her way to a career fifth Paralympic gold medal in a Paralympic record time of 3:22.50.
