Apple files application for patent of environment friendly bag

California, Sept20:Apple has filed a patent application titled “bag”, for a retail shopping paper bag made mostly out of recycled paper.

Apple plans to use a minimum of 60 per cent recycled material in the bags and use nothing but paper in the construction, along with a little glue. Though, Apple played a smart hand by writing down valuable information such as “Bags are often used for containing items”.

The bag is an effort to reduce the environmental impact of the production, use and disposal of the bag. “The bag may be formed of a container and a handle”. Although it’s formed entirely of paper, Apple doesn’t want it to feel rough and unfinished like common paper handles, but rather to have the feel and flexibility of a shoelace.

Apple has previously said that it will move away from using plastic bags in its stores to more environmentally friendly paper bags. Only the adhesive used for sticking the bag together, is not made of paper. Paper handles are normally found to be stiff and inflexible, which gives the impression of an unfinished product. The same philosophy is applied to this bag as well, where Apple is making its own bags instead of getting off the shelf bags.

The United States patent office has issued 6,785 patents this week with some of them, like this one from Apple, more interesting than others. Such reinforcement inserts can augment the strength and resistance to tearing of the bag container material to make it structurally suitable for use as a bag, thereby increasing the amount of post-consumer content usable in an SBS paper bag.
