Tom Rosamilia, SVP, IBM Systems, said: “A hybrid cloud model enables clients to continuously adapt while also optimizing on-premises investments. IBM is uniquely able to support the flexibility clients need across IBM Systems and the cloud”.

As well as the new cloud offerings, Big Blue has also expanded collaborations with other players to focus on hybrid cloud environments.

Canonical claims Ubuntu is the most popular operating system in cloud, with more than two million Ubuntu Linux instances launched in the cloud in 2015.

Mike Perera, vice president of IBM z Systems Software, says the z Systems for Cloud with Operational Insights and Hybrid Application Performance Management are meant to make it simpler for IT organizations to manage hybrid cloud computing environments that include z/OS or one of the variants of Linux that IBM now supports on the mainframe. Z Systems is a Saas-based offering, helping businesses make better decisions based on trends and expertise on real performance data. Cloud-based services analyze Z System performance, provide recommended actions and enable continuous benchmarking. IBM also moved to extend its IBM Spectrum data protection capability to include object-based storage.

The latest offerings will be; Power Systems for cloud, z Systems for cloud, and IBM Spectrum Copy Data Management and Protect.

92% said the most successful cloud projects enable creation and support of new business models. They expect 45 percent of workloads to remain on dedicated on-premise systems, even as cloud use expands.

IBM said it also has a number of new software solutions and partners for an open and collaborative software ecosystem in the cloud. This enables clients to leverage Canonical’s portfolio across the three platforms with simplified and automated OpenStack management. “Through our collaboration with IBM, customers will fully benefit from Hortonworks’ 100 percent open source Hadoop distribution in combination with the unique value of IBM Power Systems”. This will allow clients to utilize Open Enterprise Hadoop as a complementary component of their data architectures to enable a broad range of new applications, as well as to enrich existing ones with additional data sources.

Above: IBM has new cloud analytics. They’re flexible, scalable and are integrated with OpenStack-based cloud management tools with built-in capacity and on demand features. As part of that effort, IBM will make the data it collects accessible to third-party applications via a well-defined application programming interface, says Perera. An HMC Apps as a Service technology preview provides a capability to automatically aggregate Power Systems’ performance and inventory data across an enterprise.
