Kasich ranks in the middle of the pack for popularity among governors

Kansas Republican Sam Brownback of Kansas, Democrat Dan Malloy of CT, and Republican Chris Christie of New Jersey had the highest disapproval ratings of 71 percent, 70 percent and 68 percent, respectively.

His unfavorability appears tied to Kansas lawmakers cutting personal income taxes, which The Associated Press notes has sparked budget-balancing troubles and worries about education funding.

In May, Malloy was only ahead of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder for the dubious honor of being the most disliked governor, but now Snyder has been replaced by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, according to Morning Consult. His previous 60 percent disapproval and 36 percent approval ratings have shifted to 68 percent and 29 percent, respectively.

In only the latest in a string of bad news for this former Republican presidential candidate, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie comes in as the third-least-popular governor.

In the August primary, more than a dozen conservative Republicans in the House and Senate aligned with the governor were defeated by moderate Republican challengers. Malloy is close behind at 70 percent disapproval, 26 percent approval.

“Kansans have elected Governor Brownback to statewide office in five consecutive elections”, said Eileen Hawley, the governor’s spokeswoman.

To be clear, Baker’s popularity in the Bay State is still sky high, with an approval rating of 70 percent and 18 percent disapproving. Morning Consult said it polled 71,900 registered voters in 50 states. Nebraska’s Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts had comparable numbers – 56 percent favorable, 31 percent unfavorable. The margin of error in Idaho was five percent. Others, like Michigan’s Gov. Rick Snyder and Gov. Bruce Rauner of IL, have refused to endorse their party’s candidate. Pat McCrory didn’t make the top 10 most unpopular list but his approval ratings slipped with controversy over the state’s new law governing which bathrooms transgendered people may use.
