McElwain: Luke Del Rio to miss Tennessee game with injury

Florida will have a new starter on the field against Tennessee, but that quarterback isn’t new to starting.

“We’re already in the “next man up” mindset, and we’re just executing”, defensive back Rashaan Gaulden said.

Appleby has played on the big stage before, starting 11 games in his three seasons at Purdue. Now he gets to go to a real fun place to play in the SEC. That’s the fewest yards allowed in a game in school history. The old record of 59 came against Western Carolina in 2006. Trainers rushed to the field as Del Rio ripped off his helmet. Del Rio later had his fourth-down pass from the UNT 8 fall incomplete.

But that was hardly the end of it for Florida (3-0). And when you see something like that, it’s my responsibility when their parents aren’t here to be there parents… “My momma always told me if you play with fire, you get burnt.”? “He wasn’t trying to cheap shot him”.

The Gators visit to Tennessee (No. 14 AP/No. 12 coaches) will pit two top-20 teams for the first time since 2006.

“It got a little gritty after that went down”, Florida left tackle David Sharpe said.

The line needs to show improvement for Tennessee and there would be no time better than this week to show out and help the Vols snap their losing streak to the Gators. Will the passing game be enough of a consistent threat to keep Florida from loading up on the run?

Del Rio injured his left knee late in the third quarter against North Texas on Saturday night.

According to multiple reports, Del Rio suffered a sprained MCL and will be out two to four weeks, but Florida coach Jim McElwain did not confirm the diagnosis this week. Dvoracek and UNT coach Seth Littrell are Oklahoma graduates and played for the Sooners under coach Bob Stoops.

“You don’t ever want to be somebody’s caddie”, he said. McElwain also said it’s a great opportunity for true freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask as they move up the depth chart and will take more meaningful reps at practice. These factors often forced the quarterback to play catch-up and carry the offense. Florida running back Mark Thompson carried the ball into the middle of UNT’s defensive line and was stuffed for no gain.

INJURY UPDATES: Standout receiver Antonio Callaway is still “hurting pretty good” from a quadriceps injury and is questionable this week, McElwain said.

-WR Josh Malone: The junior caught five passes for 69 yards with two touchdowns against OH, giving him four on the season.

McElwain said linebacker Kylan Johnson (leg) and cornerback Chris Williamson (knee) are expected back at some point this week.

Beating Florida will require the Vols to be livelier and sharper than they’ve been in their first three games.

“If there’s a game that you circle on your calendar, it’s Tennessee-Florida, SEC East”, Tabor said.
