Syria aid convoy hit by air strike
A helicopter attack on the southern village of Dael killed at least eight people, activists said. It was suspending operations for three days in protest.

The UN has suspended all aid missions in the beleaguered nation after 21 people died in what UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called a “sickening, savage and apparently deliberate attack” on vehicles delivering aid.
“The cease-fire is in danger, is being seriously affected”, he said, but only the USA and Russian Federation could declare it over.
Kirby noted the Syrian declaration that the ceasefire is over.
A Red Crescent official in Syria confirmed the attack, but said no further information was available.
The Observatory said a total of 36 people had died in the violence across the battleground region.
Aid deliveries to the besieged eastern districts of Aleppo have not reached their destination.
Seven days after the agreement was reached by Russian Federation, which backs Syrian President Bashar Assad, and the USA, which backs anti-Assad rebels, the regime blamed the truce’s collapse on the rebels, and unilaterally declared that the cease-fire is over.
That was an improvement from Monday, when Syria’s Russian-backed government declared the cease-fire over, and Moscow and Damascus were harshly criticizing the United States for a mistaken air raid on Syrian soldiers over the weekend.
While some aid was delivered, agencies were severely hampered in the initial days of the ceasefire last week, unable to cross the border into Syria as they lacked permits from the government, United Nations officials said.
Russia on Saturday night called an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting to discuss that airstrike, leading to an angry war of words between USA and Russian diplomats.
-Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoy in Syria, calling the bombers “cowards”.
“The convoy was the outcome of a long process of permission and preparations to assist isolated civilians”.
He said the airstrikes on Aleppo province, including the ones that hit the convoy, were part of some 40 air raids that lasted about two hours – starting at about 7:30 p.m. Monday – and that “it was mostly Russian warplanes who carried out the air raid”.
Aid distribution to Syrian civilians caught up in the conflict had already faced severe difficulties.
Jan Egeland, head of the United Nations humanitarian task force for Syria, said the convoy was bombed despite aid agencies coordinating their movements with all sides on the ground.
David Swanson, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said earlier Monday that a convoy on trucks was crossing into Orum al-Kubra with “wheat flour, health supplies and other emergency supplies” for 78,000 people in the area.
Hussein Badawi, who leads the Syrian Civil Defense – also known as the White Helmets – in Uram al-Kubra, says Tuesday the strikes came from helicopters and land missiles.
The strike officially brought to an end the peace pact brokered by Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov less than a week ago.
The United States, Russia and other key players in the Syria peace process will meet Tuesday in NY after Syria’s army announced the end of a week-long truce, a US spokesman said.
However, Assad’s army is accusing the rebel forces of undermining the ceasefire.
The ceasefire had been called specifically to allow aid into some of the most desperate parts of Syria.
