Lights, colours and music wrap up Rio Paralympics

Of the Canadian athletes who medalled, four were under age 20. Does it mean that our performance at Rio 2016 was a failure? He wished good luck to Tokyo, who will be the next city to host the games.

RIO DE JANEIRO-An armless guitarist ripped out riffs with his toes, dancers in wheelchairs performed handstands and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike was handed the Paralympic flag by Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes.

Missing though was Brazil’s interim President Michel Temer, who had been booed at the opening ceremony.

Iran’s national team of sitting volleyball has been crowned as the gold medalist of Paralympic Games in Brazil.

“The Paralympic Family is united in grief at this horrendous tragedy which casts a shadow over what have been great Paralympic Games here in Rio”, Philip Craven, the committee’s president, said in a statement.

“Tonight is a celebration of the last twelve days of sport but its also a sombre occasion after yesterday’s events”.

The British Paralympic team tweeted: “We are devastated by the news of Bahman Golbarnezhad’s passing”. Born without arms, he learned to play the guitar with his feet.

Referring to the political instability and deep recession plaguing Brazil, he conceded that it had been “a mission of many doubts”. Four years ago, our athletes got podiums in only seven.

ParalympicsGB won 64 golds, the most by a British team since 1988, and a total of 147 medals.

The 31-year-old grabbed two silver medals for both women’s 100m and 400m. Part of that success, however, was due to many tickets being sold for as little as $3 — or given away to school children in an global fill-the-seats campaign.

Russian Federation was suspended from the Rio Paralympics by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in early August for failure to comply with the organization’s anti-doping rules. These include two golds, one silver and one bronze, stood in 43rd place in the medal table.

All in all a positive medal tally for Team SA, who will return to their country on Tuesday morning to be welcomed by many excited and proud South Africans at the OR Tambo International Airport.

The 17 medals came courtesy of numerous talented swimmers and track and field athletes.

Britain’s Olympic athletes won 27 golds from 15 sports, and 67 medals in total, smashing UK Sport’s pre-Games target of at least 48 medals, meaning Rio was the nation’s most successful “away” Games.
