US downplays Iran nuclear inspection report

The secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) indicated on Thursday that it has almost finished examining Tehran’s landmark nuclear deal with world powers but will announce no conclusion before the US Congress does.

“However, I can state that the arrangements are technically sound and consistent with our long-established practices”.

The IAEA says – based on satellite images – that it suspects Iran may have experimented with high-explosive detonators for nuclear arms at Parchin and completed additional weapons-related work at other sites.

A White House spokesman said the administration was “confident” in an agreement that would have Iran’s own inspectors examine a suspected weapons site.

Wednesday’s massive scandal surrounding IAEA access to Iran’s Parchin military site, stemming entirely from an Associated Press story by George Jahn, was already falling apart by evening, with the AP cutting numerous bogus allegations from the initial story.

“Such statements misrepresent the way in which we will undertake this important verification work”.

On July 14, Iran and the IAEA signed a roadmap for “the clarification of past and present issues” regarding Iran’s nuclear program in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

Iran would be able to keep portions of its nuclear program, including enriching plutonium and uranium, arguing it’s for peaceful research and not to develop a nuclear bomb.

“They have American hostages”.

According to data given to the IAEA by some member countries, Iran may have conducted hydrodynamic tests at Parchin in the past to assess how specific materials react under high pressure, such as in a nuclear explosion.

This new revelation will only increase opposition to the deal with Iran.

Amano said the claims are inaccurate.

After critics questioned the details of the report Thursday, the AP published what it said was a transcription of a draft version of the IAEA-Iran arrangement.

Opponents of the Iran deal will have to look elsewhere for their silver bullet.

The Parchin agreement was worked out between the IAEA and Iran. “Should Iran not comply with the inspections and conditions of the agreement then the crippling global sanctions that brought Iran to the negotiating table will snap back into effect and once again isolate the Iranian regime”. In it, I outlined my belief that an acceptable deal would be long-term and fully transparent, and would provide for the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program verified by intrusive inspections in exchange for phased sanctions relief.

“I think it will only weaken the Jewish organisations because it has become clear throughout this process that these organisations do not speak for the Jewish community”, Levine said.
