Sprained thumb could leave struggling Bears without Cutler

The Bears fell to 0-2 Monday night, losing to the Eagles in their home opener, but it appears that their quarterback may not be lost after all. Cutler left the Bears’ 29-14 loss to the Eagles with the injury, and it was initially reported that he could be out for the forseeable future. “As a quarterback, you kind of need your right thumb”. “We’ll evaluate tomorrow. We’ve got practice tomorrow, we’re on a short week already”. But Fox wasn’t ready to put any sort of timetable on Cutler’s absence. “But that’d be no, he practiced every play of practice last week”, he said, adding that the thumb “didn’t appear” to affect Cutler in practice. “I just listen to our medical people”.

Jay Cutler has a sprained right thumb that doesn’t need surgery right now, but John Fox wouldn’t rule it out entirely when the Bears’ head coach met the media Tuesday at Halas Hall. Though Fox made sure to stress that the injury is not a season-ender, Trevathan will be out indefinitely.

Should the Bears have pulled him earlier?

The defense was hit hard, with linebacker Danny Trevathan scheduled for surgery Wednesday morning on a sprained thumb. Cutler said after the game that he had trouble gripping the ball and “couldn’t get as much as I wanted” on the pass that floated to Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham. “And we don’t have those results back yet”. On top of that, they’ll reportedly be without defensive tackle Eddie Goldman for the next month.

Cutler’s injury, however, remains the most noteworthy.

Cutler has shown a knack for quick healing.

Sources told the Sun-Times that the quarterback first hurt his thumb in the season-opening loss to the Texans, and that the injury typically takes three-to-four weeks to heal. The Bears won that game to improve to 7-3, but went into a tailspin on the way to an 8-8 finish.

Cutler was 12 of 17 for 157 yards before leaving the game. He said Cutler will undergo rehab.

Through two weeks, the Bears rank 31st in the National Football League in total offense (271 yards per game) and 30th in scoring (14 ppg).

If Cutler is unable to play, journeyman Brian Hoyer would start Sunday’s road game against the Dallas Cowboys. Since Cutler joined the Bears in 2009, the Bears are 5-10) in games Cutler didn’t start.

Trevathan was among the Bears’ prized additions during the offseason, and he has rewarded them thus far with 15 tackles and a sack in the team’s first two games.
