Tebow homers in batting practice at Day 2 of Mets camp

Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy victor and former NFL quarterback, signed a minor league deal with the Mets earlier this month and now joins 57 other aspiring players for the team’s three-week instructional league. For me, failure is not going after it and letting the chips fall where they may.

Hundreds of fans – many wearing Tebow jerseys, some even wearing now-on-sale Mets shirts with Tebow’s name – showed up; a worker at the Mets’ complex said instructional league workouts previous year drew maybe a couple dozen people, tops.

Tim Tebow, after taking part in his first day of instructional league play with the New York Mets, says he has no interest in fielding calls from teams that have a need at the quarterback position because of an injury. It’s really hard to deny that this isn’t anything more than a cash grab for the Mets’ minor league teams, and moves like this seem to drive that point home. Because people at the circus love souvenirs, right?

“I try not to let it get to me”, Tebow said of the attention. Among them was an inquiry about whether or not the Patriots had reached out to Tebow, in the wake of Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury on Sunday. “I’m a member of the Mets family”.

Tebow and his teammates are on the field from 10 a.m.to about 1 or 2 p.m.

Tebow, hoping to make it as a professional outfielder, will be part of daily workouts through Thursday, but he will be excused Friday and Saturday for his college football analyst duties. “You focus on being the best you can every day and the journey”, said Tebow. He’s serious about this pursuit, and insisted that getting to the major leagues is his goal. “There were a lot of times at Florida where I thought about going out and starting baseball”. Hitting a baseball is one of my favorite things to do in sports.

The bat – a 34½-inch, 33-ounce maple one, to be precise – is back in his hands again.
