But it also illustrates the difficulty Oracle will have in moving big customers predominantly to the cloud.
In its latest quarter, Amazon’s Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) business posted $2.89 billion in revenue – a jump of 58 percent over the same period previous year. “Amazon’s going to have serious competition”, said Ellison, the Executive Chairman Larry Ellison said Sunday during a presentation at Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco.
For those who came in late, AWS leads the cloud infrastructure market, with Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and IBM trailing behind.
Finally, the company also is unveiling Ravello Cloud Service, for running VMware and Kernel-base Virtual Machine workloads in the public cloud. And, of course, implementing these machines means that companies will be diving deeper into Oracle’s ecosystem.

On Monday, Oracle announced that it signed an agreement to acquire Palerra, which will enable it to offer identity and security cloud services. “Oracle Adaptive Intelligent Applications leverage anonymized information from our extensive Data Cloud to optimize existing Cloud Application functionality”.
Oracle claims its Container Cloud Services offerings allow deployment of Docker containers “with a single click”.
During his keynote speech, Hurd also sought to prove the company is a credible player in cloud computing by trotting out a series of customers at his OpenWorld conference keynote.
“The addition of new IaaS offerings reflects our ongoing commitment to help clients achieve value through Oracle’s cloud solutions and solidifies Accenture’s position as the first managed services provider for Oracle’s cloud portfolio”. Cloud hardware and software bundles, offered in subscription models, will be compatible with Oracle’s cloud, Ellison added. Oracle, according to Synergy, sits in the next 20 vendors – including HPE, Rackspace, and Salesforce – whose combined market share is smaller than Amazon’s.
“We’re in the middle of a generational change as computing moves from on-premises; a lot of companies and data centers all over the world [are going] to super data centers called clouds”.
