Bills Announce Firing Of OC Greg Roman

Ryan’s defense watched as none other than Ryan Fitzpatrick hung up almost 500 yards of total offense, including almost 400 through the air.

The decision to fire offensive coordinator Greg Roman and promote Anthony Lynn to replace him one day after a nationally televised, 37-31 loss to the New York Jets was the most impactful move Rex Ryan could make without firing himself after his first 0-2 start as a head coach. Rob Ryan, Rex’s twin, is Buffalo’s defensive coordinator.

“I met with Greg this morning and we agreed to part ways and I’m naming Anthony Lynn as our offensive coordinator”, said Ryan.

There’s no way this defense was better, and while it played well in Baltimore against a mediocre Ravens’ offense, it was unmasked by the Jets.

The Bills have been downright putrid on one side of the ball in each of their first two losses.

“I’m accountable for everything that goes on here”, Ryan said. Sure, the Bills offense was explosive, making big plays but had only 16 first downs to New York’s 28.

We saw both Goodwin and Salas make gigantic plays for touchdowns on Thursday night (watch here and here), and it’s likely Ryan wants to see even more of that.

“It’s one of those thing where the decision is made, and we’re going to rally around the guys that we have in this room”, Incognito said. It’s obvious that if your defense can’t get off the field and your offense can’t stay on it, your chances of winning plummet.

Fitzpatrick completed six passes each to receivers Eric Decker (126 yards, one touchdown), Marshall (101 yards), and Quincy Enunwa (92 yards). As a running backs coach, Lynn’s backs have run for the most cumulative yards in that time.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was very effective in the win: 24-34 for 374 yards and a touchdown.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said the wide receiver’s left knee is OK and he should be able to play in New York’s next game against Kansas City on September 25. His 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put the Jets in front 27-24.

Brandon Marshall feared the worst when a New York Jets trainer escorted him off the sideline to have his left knee examined. One source informed of the team’s thinking suggested the Pegulas used the meetings to confirm that Ryan was considering getting rid of Roman after the Bills’ Week 1 loss.

“This is officially the beginning of the end for Rex Ryan”. It seems unlikely that he’d get fired this early, or at all during the regular season, but if his team doesn’t turn it around, ownership may take a long look at moving on. At the same time, he made a significant change to his coaching staff by firing offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Friday.
