New Jersey bombing: Explosion reported near train station, 5 devices found

Cameras caught the moment a law enforcement robot, working to disarm five pipe bombs found at the Elizabeth, New Jersey train station, accidentally detonated one of them early Monday morning. “The other devices, I don’t know what the Federal Bureau of Investigation and State Police are doing at this moment, but they are trying to remove them in a secure way so they can preserve them for evidence”.

There were no injuries or damage caused by the devices, but Bollwage warned that other explosions could be expected.

The Chelsea bomb contained a residue of Tannerite, an explosive often used for target practice that can be picked up in many sporting goods stores, law enforcement officials said.

Bollwage said two men called police and reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of a package after finding it around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

EARLIER: A suspicious device found in a backpack at a train station in New Jersey exploded as a bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot.

A day earlier, two men walking down a New York City street made off with a rolling backpack that someone had left on the sidewalk about 15 minutes earlier.

And on Sunday night, five explosive devices were found near an Elizabeth, New Jersey, train station.

New Jersey Transit and Amtrak train service resumed Monday morning after service was suspended overnight. On Saturday, 29 people were injured in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood after a blast, and an unexploded pressure-cooker device was later found four blocks away.

So far, there is no indication whether the latest incident in Elizabeth is connected to the Chelsea explosion.

The official says two officers were shot in the encounter in Linden, New Jersey.

Here’s a recap: Just minutes before the Marine Corps charity run began on Saturday in Seaside Park, New Jersey, a nearby garbage can exploded. The second device did not detonate and was able to be taken away for examination by the bomb squad. No one was injured.

The incident came after the United States was shaken by three attacks at the weekend, including a Saturday night bombing that injured 29 in Manhattan and a stabbing incident at a Minnesota shopping mall that wounded nine. What they found were some pipes and wires which they immediately suspected could be a bomb.

This comes after separate bombings in New York City and Seaside Park, New Jersey. The explosion was from an apparent homemade device placed in front of a residence for the blind and near a major thoroughfare with many restaurants.

NY governor has termed the bombings as an “act of terrorism”. “It’s not in a highly congested area”, he added.
