The world No. 1 complained vehemently that someone was toking a joint during his Rogers Cup semi final match with Jeremy Chardy on Saturday.
The clash at Roland Garros went to a fifth set after Murray had lost the first two but this time he managed to take the opening set, breaking serve twice to do so.
The British star ran out 6-4 4-6 6-3 victor to beat the world No1 for the first time since his Wimbledon success in 2013.
Murray dedicated his win to his coach, Amélie Mauresmo, who gave birth to a son that same morning.
With his ranking back to No. 2 and his confidence soaring after his 35th career title (11th Masters), Murray moves on to Cincinnati where he’ll try for a third crown there.
Murray regained the title that he won in 2009 and 2010 and stopped the winning streak of Djokovic who has already won the Wimbledon, Australian Open and Maters 1000 in Rome, Monte-Carlo, Miami and Indian Wells this year.
Murray faced his first break point at 4-2 and an over-hit forehand put Djokovic immediately back into the match, but he had more joy on the top seed’s serve soon after to clinch the first set 6-4.
The top-ranked player later explained why the pot was not the kind of buzz he’d hoped would surround his play. But I fought well and stayed calm in the important moments of the third set.
Murray took and built upon the early break from Djokovic.
“But it’s not easy, not only because we get on but because he’s bloody good, he’s number one in the world and he hasn’t lost in a Masters Series this year”.
“Someone is smoking weed, I can smell it, and I’m getting dizzy”, he said to the umpire. He’s going to be with me pretty much every event I play between now and the end of the year.
“To win this one was nice, especially the way the match went”, said Murray. “He deserved it”, Novak Djokovic said inCBC Sports.

“But he still has to get past Federer and Djokovic and to do that he’ll need to be at his very best”. That single break threatened to become a double break in the Brits next service game, but some fearless play averted the danger.
