Shut down: Across Tamil Nadu majority of shops remained closed

The complaint was in connection with the speech made by leading actors Puneeth Rajkumar (41), Upendra Rao alias Uppi (47) and Darshan Thoogudeep (39) in a meeting at Mandya district, Karnataka, on September 12 against releasing Cauvery Water for Tamil Nadu.

The protests erupted after the Supreme Court ordered Karnataka state to release water from a river to ease a shortage in Tamil Nadu until later this month.

He was later detained by the police while attempting to lay siege to Tiruchy railway junction station.

However, government buses are running with heavy police security.

Tamil Nadu is under a complete shut down to protest the violence in Karnataka over the past few days, which targeted Tamil populations in the state.

Convenor of DMK S P Sivakumar said the party pledged support for the bandh in line with the decision taken by the party high command in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, where also a dawn-to-dusk shutdown is being observed on Friday. Private schools are closed but most of the government schools will be opened today.

On Monday, miscreants in the guise of pro-Karnataka activists, took to the streets burning Tamil Nadu registered vehicles and attacking businesses owned by people from that state.

DMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, opposition leader Stalin and four DMK MLAs courted arrest in Chennai.

MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and VCK chief Thirumavalavan staged protests in Tiruchirappalli and here respectively and were detained by police when they attempted to stage a rail blockade.
