Donald Trump Jr compares Syrian refugees to Skittles

Trump has frequently called for other countries to chip in larger amounts to help pay for the U.S. military to maintain its bases around the world, in addition to calling for Gulf states like Saudi Arabia to bear a larger financial burden in the fight against ISIS and in building a safe zone to shelter refugees.

The image was used as a metaphor for the refugee situation, with text reading, “If I had a bowl of Skittles and I told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful?” Would you take a handful? “That’s our Syria refugee problem”.

The maker of Skittles sweets yesterday objected to a social media post by Donald Trump Jr in which the Republican presidential hopeful’s son compared admitting Syrian refugees to the United States to eating poisoned pieces of the brightly coloured, fruit-flavoured treats.

“I’m really really appalled by having my image, you know, on Twitter used against the refugees”, said David Kittos, 48.

The Trump campaign responded to a question about the photo with a more general comment on the controversy over the tweet. Mr Walsh quickly joined in the discussion, tweeting: “That’s the point I made last month”.

He also told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review it would be unwise for his father to release his tax returns because it would “distract” from his father’s “main message”. Tuesday that “Muslim countries have to stand up and do more”.

“Skittles are candy. Refugees are people”, Wrigley Americas, the company that produces Skittles, said in a statement after the tweet went out.
